Elders who live on your own, here’s what you need to do to stay safe in your home:
- Keep emergency numbers by each phone, write information in large print so it is easily read when in a hurry or frightened.

- Prevent falls in your home trying these improvements:
- Improve lighting
- Remove rugs
- Remove carpeting
- Wear proper shoes or gripper socks
- Use alerts that are worn and pressed if you have fallen and alert 911.
- For the bathroom: add grab bars, use shower seats and taller toilets.
- Minimize clutter, make sure paths are wide and clear.
- Rearrange furniture for clear pathway in home.
- Medications:
- Keep all medications in their original containers so you don’t mix up medicines.
- Ask pharmacists to put large-print labels on your medications so you’re able to read easier.
- Take all your medications in a well-lit room, so you can see the labels.
- Bring all pill bottles to your healthcare provider or pharmacist so they can make sure you are taking it correctly.
- Cleaning products:
- Never mix cleaning liquids together when you are cleaning.
- Cleaning liquids can create deadly gases in your home.
Protect against abuse – Elders are one of the most preyed upon population.
- Here are tips for Elder’s protection:
- Keep windows and doors locked at all times.
- Never let a stranger into your home when you are home alone.
- Don’t share any personal information, such as social security number, bank account information with individuals you don’t know.
- Do not let yourself be pressured in making and donations, purchases, or sign anything if you feel forced or pressured. It is never rude to discuss with family member or friend.
